Group Purchasing Service
The FPWA Group Purchasing Service (GPS)* links all nonprofit agencies with 501(c)(3) status in a purchasing partnership where they enjoy the benefits of large volume pricing and preferred customer status without buying large quantities. GPS staff interview prospective vendors, set up buying arrangements, as well as provide information and buying tips.
Did you know that all NYC buildings (including not for profit buildings) are required to burn cleaner fuels in compliance with Local Law 43? Any building located in the five boroughs that are currently burning number 6 oil for heating and hot water will need to convert to comply. There are a number of conversion options to bring your building into compliance, but there are upfront costs. The purpose here is to outline a strategy that can help make your conversion offset these upfront costs and hopefully pay for itself. The key to this strategy is to generate savings not only from the oil to gas pricing differential, but also from lower energy consumption as well. The savings from favorable gas pricing is part of the process, but achieving energy savings is not. In order for your conversion to maximize its payback potential, you need to benefit from both. With oil to gas conversions, the focus is always on the savings realized from the lower pricing of gas compared to oil. The economic analysis of the price savings needs to be calculated. With a number 6 to number 2 oil conversion there isn’t any savings from a pricing differential. The only opportunity for savings is a reduction in energy consumption, because you save as you consume less oil. Fortunately, boilers in older buildings using number 6 oil are generally oversized, so resizing your boiler is a realistic savings opportunity and environmentally responsible. A note of caution; determining the correct sizing of a boiler involves a complex analysis. Make sure your consultant is experienced and has a proven track record of accurate boiler sizing. Consider an FPWA GPS vendor for this, NYG Green Partners.
