CHILDREN’S AND YOUTH SERVICES
The Hearst Foundations support well-established non-profits that address education, health, culture, and social service issues. In the area of social service, priority is given to efforts that enable children, youth and families to lead productive and independent lives. The Foundations’ interests include family support services, domestic violence and child abuse prevention, after-school programs, youth development, literacy, housing and homelessness, job training, economic development, and programs for older adults.

The mission of All Stars Helping Kids is to promote a safe, healthy and rigorous learning environment for disadvantaged children in low-income communities. They provide grants up to $3500. Projects requesting funding should answer the needs of disadvantaged children in one of three areas: Rigorous Academics; Health and Fitness; or Life Skills. The program must operate in one of the five boroughs of New York City.

The Charles Lafitte Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life of children by supporting programs which encourage children to reach their fullest potential. The Foundation supports programs that deal with issues such as child abuse, foster housing, literacy, educational advancement, after-school programs, hunger projects and the general well-being of children.

The Heckscher Foundation for Children was founded to promote the welfare of children, primarily in New York City. It supports organizations serving youth in the fields of education, family services, job training, health, arts and recreation.

The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation’s primary goal is to support and initiate programs that directly serve the needs of children living in poverty. Priority is given to initiatives addressing children’s health, education, and microfinance.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
The RGK Foundation awards grants in the areas of Education, Community, and Medicine/Health. The Foundation’s primary interests in Community are human services, community improvement, abuse prevention, and youth development programs. Applicants must complete an electronic Letter of Inquiry at their website before submitting a proposal.

The Citizens Bank Foundation gives priority consideration to charitable grants that:

  1. Promote affordable housing
  2. Encourage the development of innovative responses to basic human needs
  3. Encourage community-based services targeted to low- and moderate-income families and individuals
  4. Support community development initiatives that are catalysts for economically distressed areas
  5. Promote new ways to address issues of economic self-sufficiency.

The mission of the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation is to build strong and vibrant communities, improve the quality of life, and make a positive difference. They provide grants to support these focus areas:
  1. Education
  2. Community Development
  3. Health and Human Services
  4. Arts and Culture
  5. Environment
  6. Civic

FINANCIAL LITERACY
J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation’s strategic focus is to work with community-based partners to address issues related to poverty and social exclusion by building economic infrastructure, promoting self-sufficiency, and supporting efforts to narrow social inequalities. In the area of community development, they support resident-focused programming that addresses workforce development, asset building, and financial literacy; and community-focused programming that addresses economic development and affordable housing. To be considered for support, a potential grantee must first submit an online Letter of Inquiry.

Through grants, sponsorships, matching gifts and volunteers, the KeyBank Foundation supports programs that emphasize economic self-sufficiency, including financial education, workforce development and diversity programs. Currently, they are accepting grant proposals; preliminary inquires are accepted by phone or in writing. Please provide the name, address, telephone number and IRS tax-exempt classification of your organization; a description of the program for which you seek funding; the goals you hope to achieve; and the amount requested. The KeyBank Foundation typically reviews requests quarterly.

HEALTH
The Bristol-Myers Squibb Community Grants Program helps support programs and organizations that improve health, help children succeed in school and assist people in the communities where employees work. These communities are only in the states of NY, NJ, PA, CT and MA. Their main areas of interest include assessing unmet medical needs; reducing health disparities; and providing essential services to people in need through civic and community programs.

Walgreen Co.’s non-profit funding categories include organizations which have a focus on improving:

  1. Access to health and wellness in their community
  2. Pharmacy education programs and mentoring initiatives
  3. Civic and community outreach
  4. Emergency and disaster relief

Health is their major area of focus and the largest share of their annual budget is allocated to programs that address health needs.

The New York State Department of Health Health Care Efficiency and Affordability Law for New Yorkers (HEAL NY) Capital Grant Program will provide grants to support and fund capital projects which address conditions as cited in PHL Section 2818 (2) including facilities in financial distress and addressing unmet health care needs in New York State as determined by the Commissioner.

HOUSING
The New York State Homeless Housing and Assistance Corporation and the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance have issued an open-ended RFP for the Homeless Housing and Assistance Program. This program, set out in Sections 41 through 44 of the Social Services Law, authorizes grants to acquire, construct, or rehabilitate housing to expand the supply of housing for low-income people who are, or would otherwise be, homeless. A priority will be given to New York City applicants that propose supportive housing for chronically homeless single adults who suffer from a serious and persistent mental illness or who are diagnosed as mentally ill and chemically addicted.
