hiv and aids The HIV/AIDS service system provides needed assistance to those living with HIV and AIDS so that they can access quality, coordinated and comprehensive health care. HIV/AIDS services include:

  1. HIV prevention to reduce HIV prevalence and incidence
  2. Comprehensive continuum of care, quality treatment and care, drug assistance programs and support services

Recent Advocacy:

FPWA organized a community-wide event in December to discuss opportunities and challenges faced by people living with HIV/AIDS when entering or re-entering the workforce. Dr. Liza Conyers, Associate Professor at Pennsylvania State University, presented findings from a recently completed national survey on the employment and vocational needs of persons living with HIV/AIDS followed by a panel discussion and an open dialogue with the audience.

  • Appropriate, enhance or restore funding (City, State and Federal) for treatment and care, drug assistance programs, prevention programs and support services;
  • Dismantle barriers that impede HIV prevention efforts such as stigma, discrimination, poverty, racism, homophobia and transphobia, and gender inequality
  • Engage faith communities and human services organizations, particularly those that serve the elderly and youth, to conduct HIV prevention and education activities

Did You Know?

*HIV transmission patterns have shifted over time. People of color make up 76% of all people living with AIDS in New York State. Within this population, 76% -- approximately 88,739 people reside in New York City.

*In New York City, of all cases of females living with HIV and AIDS, women of color consistently compose over 90% of the population in both 2005 and 2006, and that women in the age 50 or above category have increased from 26% or 7,170 in 2005 to 28% or 8,055 in 2006.

Where We Stand:

FPWA believes that access to quality, coordinated and comprehensive health care is vital to all individuals living with HIV and/or AIDS (PLWHA or PLWA) and their families. A major goal of the public health systems and public health policies should be to provide and ensure access to the health care needed by people who are living with HIV/AIDS, particularly those who are uninsured, underinsured, homeless, living with physical or mental disabilities and immigrants with limited English proficiency. An equally important goal is to develop and implement effective strategies to reduce HIV prevalence and incidence with an emphasis on targeting women, youth and children in communities of color.
