As a teacher\, her greatest joy is seeing you gradually embrace your own empowered practice\, liberating yourself from the internalized patterns that have made you suffer for too long. \nYikai Xu \nYikai is a PhD student in counseling psychology at the Culture\, Emotion\, and Health Lab at New York University and a member of Mind & Life’s Young Adult Advisory Council. His research interests primarily focus on cognitive and emotional processes underlying adaptive coping and psychological well-being across cultures. His current constructs of interest include contemplative practices\, emotion beliefs\, psychological flexibility\, insights\, dialectical thinking\, and acculturative and race-based stress. Currently\, Yikai is interested in investigating emotion beliefs across cultures and how culture shapes emotion beliefs and influences the process of self-reflection. Additionally\, he is interested in mapping out the underlying cognitive\, emotional\, and behavioral processes of psychological flexibility and exploring how psychological flexibility influences coping with acculturative and race-based stress among ethnoracial minorities. He is also interested in ways to promote equitable access to quality mental health services among underserved communities on the individual level as well as the policy level. Yikai is committed to building lasting community partnerships and advocating for social justice in the mental health field and beyond. \n

Chen\, Ph.D.\, is a licensed psychologist (CA\, WA) and consultant based in the San Francisco Bay Area\, CA. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The University of Texas at Austin. At the heart of her work is the value of radical self-care – a mindset of engaging in self-care in order to be more of who you’d like to be in the world and in relation with others. Dr. Chen provides individual psychotherapy to adults in California and Washington. She is a member of the Psychology of Radical Healing Collective (with fellow psychologists of color) and provides consultation and group facilitation regarding radical healing from racial trauma. Dr. Chen also supports psychology graduate students in their professional development through her Psych Grad Corner workshops\, advising\, and online resources. She values sharing knowledge about wellness and resisting oppression through blogs\, podcasts\, and community presentations. In her personal life\, Dr. Chen has co-facilitated an anti-racist parent group and anti-racism discussions in her local community. She also enjoys hiking\, watching kdramas\, and spending time with her family.

DESCRIPTION:Although everyone experiences stress\, there is a point in which prolonged exposure to adversity can cross into trauma. Certain experiences and conditions\, such as interpersonal violence\, racism\, systemic oppression\, and/or persistent community neglect\, can lead to toxic stress and be experienced as traumatic. DESCRIPTION:Register Today for Best Practices for Reflective and Supportive Supervision\nTuesday\, April 2nd from 10am – 3pm \nIn-Person Workshop \nSupervisors across human service settings face many challenges in a changing and dynamic system of care. As the key interface between organizational policies and practices and direct service professionals\, supervisors wear many hats and struggle to balance their complex roles designed to promote the mission of the organization and support the success and compassion satisfaction1 of their supervisees. Supervisory support focused on reflective and supportive supervision is a fundamental need for any organization focused on trauma-informed care that seeks to foster compassion resilience. Reflective and supportive supervision requires a trusting and collaborative relationship that addresses the needs of all staff\, and includes opportunities to reflect on issues of equity\, biases\, and racial and cultural differences in the work and the workplace. \nThe benefits of such approaches include improved quality of care\, a more engaged workforce\, improved productivity\, and reductions in costly turnover. This workshop is designed to provide supervisors with practical and concrete approaches to support their supervisees by: 1) providing supportive and reflective supervision\, 2) supporting professional development\, 3) managing performance difficulties requiring “courageous conversations”\, 4) managing levels of emotional stress and 5) creating a trusting and physically\, psychologically and culturally safe work environment that collectively increases compassion satisfaction and workforce retention. \nObjectives: \n\nParticipants will be able to describe the key components of reflective and supportive supervision. \nParticipants will identify how to promote safety through effective communication skills\, intentional use of reinforcement and modeling aligned with principles of culturally responsive supervision. \nParticipants will explain the main concepts that reflect respectful and productive strategies to address performance problems. \nParticipants will identify at least 3 practical approaches designed to support the professional development of their supervisees. \nParticipants will describe four key strategies associated with promoting leadership support for change. \nEach participant will create a practical and timely action plan associated with one or more of the topics covered. \n\nFeatured Facilitators: \n \nRegister today
