FPWA AWARDS GRANTS TO NEW YORK CITY COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS

FIGHTING TO END THE HIV/AIDS EPIDEMIC

New York – Today FPWA announces its 2021 HIV/AIDS grant awardees that focus on prevention, awareness, and treatment in New York City neighborhoods.

These community organizations understand that even as we battle the Covid-19 pandemic, the HIV and AIDS epidemic is far from over. For those living with underlying medical conditions, they remain at increased risk for severe illness from Covid-19, and a grim statistic is that those living with HIV have a 78% higher risk of death from the virus compared to those living without HIV.

Across the United States, HIV and AIDS testing and resources have been shifted to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. FPWA’s grants will help fill the funding gap and strengthen community-based HIV and AIDS programs in New York.

This is the fourth year FPWA has offered the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Ending the HIV Epidemic grant to member organizations, and they anticipate another year of community support and success.

The grantees are United Community Centers that work in East New York, Brooklyn; Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC), an Asian American human services nonprofit that delivers programs at 35 sites in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens; and Central Family Life Center, which offers programs throughout Staten Island.

The three organizations will use FPWA grants to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS-related issues, including access to preventative medication and treatment, education about transmission, and persistent health disparities in the U.S. The organizations will also continue working to end stigma and discrimination through community outreach and education. They will also participate in several National HIV/AIDS Awareness Days throughout the year and host community events to provide informational materials about testing services, prevention, and other resources.
