Heydrick Padilla

What classes are you taking this semester?

This semester I am taking Inorganic Chemistry, Current Problems in Environmental Chemistry, Geometry, and Electrodynamics.

What inspires you to do well in school?

Being able to motivate people, especially the younger generation, to be passionate about learning is what inspires me to do well in school.

Who is your role model, and why?

My mother is my role model because she instilled in me from a young age to always be kind and passionate. These two traits have stuck with me all throughout my life and have led me to become a distinguished scholar and leader at school and in my community.

What social justice issue do you care about most, and why?

I care most about poverty. The reason I care most about poverty is that I have experienced first-hand the limitations that is causes to one’s growth. Being in poverty causes many challenges such as providing for one’s family and buying the necessities which are most important, but it also puts barriers on education and experience.

What can motivate you to vote this election year?

Simplifying the voting process will motivate me to vote this election year. Being away from my home state and needing an absentee ballot causes difficulty. Last year, my absentee ballot never arrived.

Are you planning to vote?

I am planning to vote.

What is one thing you’d change in your community if you had the power to?

If I had the power to change one thing in my community it would be the access to academic and professional opportunities. My community would benefit from being exposed to more rigorous academics that will propel their education to new heights. Professional opportunities such as networking and career fairs, as well as resume and interview sessions would greatly increase the chances of members of my community to secure more skilled positions.

Rosaura Romero

What classes are you taking this semester?

I am taking Violence in the Gender World, Biology 129, Health Service Administration, Ethics in Medicine, and a Practicum interning at the Compass House (a youth homeless shelter).

What inspires you to do well in school?

This is my last year so I want to finish strong! I want to figure out what path I want to take but I have to make sure I finish with high marks.

Who is your role model, and why?

My role model is the director of Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) Shanna Crump-Owens she makes a living helping students of color graduate. I want to do something influential like that.

What social justice issue do you care about most, and why?

The social justice issue I care about the most is the reproductive health of women of color because with this political climate it seems like those rights can be taken away at any moment.

What can motivate you to vote this election year?

I personally like exercising my right to vote so I try to always vote.

Are you planning to vote?

Yes, I plan to vote.

What is one thing you’d change in your community if you had the power to?

I would make healthy organic food more accessible and affordable, I make community workouts free.

Tiara Simons

What social justice issue do you care about most, and why?

I care mostly about issues that revolve around the American Black community.

What can motivate you to vote this election year?

My motivation for the election this year is the agendas for which either party is trying to push & if it correlates with my beliefs.

Are you planning to vote?

Yes, I am planning to vote

What is one thing you’d change in your community if you had the power to?

Communities honestly don’t feel as united as they once were. I would change that.

Sarah Slater

What classes are you taking this semester?

I am currently taking Operations Management, Gender and the Workplace, Organizational Behavior, Public Relations Capstone, and Public Relations Independent study.

What inspires you to do well in school?

My future. I want to be a successful businesswoman someday and I know that what I am dealing with now will prepare me for life after college. Being able to support my family is another reason why I keep going.

Who is your role model, and why?

My role models are the people I meet every day. As a student, Resident Assistant, and Teaching Assistant, I have learned more about where people are coming from and what they are going through. Through those conversations, and confessions, I have learned a lot about my own strength and now I am able to apply it back to my life. This is why my peers inspire me to want more for myself.

What social justice issue do you care about most, and why?

One I care about the most would be mental health. Seeing how people with mental illnesses are treated truly hurts me. It hurts me because that is also the reason why so many people refuse to seek the help they need or to talk with the people who are closest to them.

What can motivate you to vote this election year?

Start the conversation! By letting people know how important it is to vote and where they can register to vote. I will be doing my part to ensure my peers can inform others and hopefully convince them to vote as well!

Are you planning to vote?

Yes! Of course!

What is one thing you’d change in your community if you had the power to?

If I could change anything in my community, it would be the education system. I want the education system to change because each generation is evolving in terms of how they learn, what they learn, and who they choose to educate them. I think that including “real life” lessons with curricular lessons would allow students to have a better outlook on life, and be more prepared for college, and the means of transitioning into adulthood.
